Play of the Week (You Make the Call)

October 5, 2009

Situation: A player who is serving the ball drops it and kicks the ball over the net for an ‘ace’. Is this allowed now that players are allowed to play the ball with any body part?

Ruling: Per Rule 8-1-1, “The server shall hit the ball wit one hand, fist, or arm while the ball is held, or after it is released by the server”. Therefore, kicking a serve is still illegal.

Last Week’s Play

Situation: After a loss of rally point, the Libero on the new serving team rotates from the Back Left position to the serving position and the player that the Libero originally replaced goes to the Front Left position [Proper Replacement]. However, the player for whom the Libero is serving fails to leave the court, staying in the Right Back position on the court. There are now seven (7) players on the serving side (six on the court plus the serving Libero).

As the R1, you recognize the infraction either (a) before or (b) after the signal for serve. What will be the proper call and penalty?

Note: This really happened in Florida last week. Buz Haymans will be sending in the resolution sometime next week.

Ruling: Still waiting on the official ruling from FL.
