Play of the Week (You Make the Call)

Situation: Team S is awarded a loss of rally point. Player S4 goes back to serve but it is really S9’s turn to serve. S4 tosses the ball for serve and lets it drop. R1 whistles and calls for a re-serve. Now S9 realizes it’s his/her turn to serve and takes the ball from S4. R1 whistles and signals for S9 to serve. S9 tosses and let’s the ball drop. Is S9 allowed to have a re-serve?

Ruling:

Last Year’s Play

Situation: A player who is serving the ball drops it and kicks the ball over the net for an ‘ace’. Is this allowed now that players are allowed to play the ball with any body part?

Ruling: Per Rule 8-1-1, “The server shall hit the ball wit one hand, fist, or arm while the ball is held, or after it is released by the server”. Therefore, kicking a serve is still illegal.
