NFHS Volleyball Exam is Underway

The required NFHS online volleyball exam is now open. You have until midnight on Saturday, August 14th to complete the exam. Remember, you can exit and re-enter the exam as many times as you need between now and the 14th. Please make sure you save a copy of your score (screen shot) just in case the VHSL does not get a report of your exam score.

Local VHSL State Rules Clinic

The local edition of the VHSL State Volleyball Rules Clinic (required of all high school officials) will be on Wednesday, July 28th in the cafeteria of Highland Springs High School, starting at 6:00 pm. Our annual CVVOA organizational meeting will be conducted immediately afterward, also in the cafeteria. Please make plans now to attend. Note: The VHSL Football clinic is also at HSHS that same night, so you might want to arrive early to get a good parking spot.

New Member Training Classes Set

NOTE : Class is now closed to new applicants

The schedule for the New Member Training Class is now complete. All sessions will be held on Mondays, starting June 14th and will be held at The Steward School, starting at 6:00 pm.

There will be a total of eight (8) Monday sessions running until August 9th with no class on Monday, July 5th. 

New members will be charged $110 and must attend at least six of the eight sessions. No make-up classes will be held.

Due to the anticipated number of applicants and the relative small size of the classroom, the training class will be limited to the first twenty (20) applicants who get their application form (found on the CVVOA Home Page) and $110.00 check (made out to CVVOA) to Willie Jones. His mailing address is:

As of June 4th, there are still openings in the class. If you haven't paid your fee and still wish to attend the class, bring a check to Steward School on the night of the first class.

CVVOA Annual Awards Banquet

The CVVOA Annual Awards Banquet will be held on Monday, November 30th at the Roma's Italian Restaurant located at 6017 Nine Mile Road, Richmond 23223.

Cocktails will begin at 6:00 with dinner being served around 6:30. This will again be a buffet style affair. Please contact Bob Provost to let him know if you are planning to attend and whether or not you are bringing a guest.

 

CVVOA Raters' Training

David Bassler and others will conduct a raters' training session on Sunday, August 16th @ 5:00pm at The Steward School. The meeting will take place in the classroom near the gym. This training is geared towards officials with 5+ years of volleyball officiating experience and will prepare people to become raters for CVVOA. Existing raters are also encouraged to attend.

 

NFHS Volleyball Exam

Time is running out on the period for taking the National Federation Volleyball Exam. All exams must be submitted for grading by midnight on Saturday, August 22nd. If you are having problems accessing the exam, please contact the National Federation.

 

CVVOA Scorekeeping Clinic

Bonny Hajek will be conducting a scorekeeping clinic in conjunction with the new member training class on Monday, July 27th at 6:30 pm at The Steward School. If interested, please go to the classroom next to the big gym.

 

VHSL Volleyball Rules Clinics Set

The schedule for all the VHSL Volleyball Rules Clinics have been posted on the VHSL and CVVOA websites. The 'local' clinic will be held on July 22nd at 6:00 pm in the Highland Springs High School Auditorium. The CVVOA organizational meeting will take place immediately afterwards at Highland Springs. Please make plans to be there so that you don't have to travel to attend a required clinic. A list of all the VHSL clinics can be found on this website. Promotions

Congratulations to the following members who have been voted into full membership of CVVOA: Charles Arvin, Luise Farmer, Sirez Hairston, Sharon Skipper, Stuart Spencer, Quentin Terry, Jonathan Tinsley and Stuart Wilson.

Also, congratulations are in order for the following officials who have been promoted from trainee to provisional status: Al Broadaway, Randall Clary, Kevin Eldred, Melody Graves-Allen, Rich Hesse, Thomas House, Ellen Mooradian, Steve Neece, Justin Ramsey, & Doug Satterwhite.

Elections

The Election of the officers of CVVOA took place at the annual business meeting held on November 23rd. The results are: Pat Kaveney – President, Brian Cowles – Vice President, David Bassler – Secretary, Bob Provost - Treasurer 

 

Continuing Issues

Scorebooks

It has been brought to the attention of the training committee that some referees are not legibly printing their names in the home team's scorebook. This must be done for four reasons: (1) to meet the requirements set forth in the Federation mechanics manual; (2) to verify that the officials listed were actually at the match; (3) to allow following officials to determine if the score-keeping was done properly [and if further training is needed]; and (4) to provide the names to the coaches should they wish to recommend an official for playoff assignments. Please do your job and make sure your name appears in the official scorebook for every match you work. It would also be a good idea to have the visiting scorekeeper write your name in that scorebook as well.
