M.R.O.S. Softball Playoff
Selection Procedure
The Softball Board of Directors has established the
following playoff selection procedure that will be used to nominate candidates
for all post-season assignments:
- The
Evaluation Committee (see list below) will convene at least two weeks
before playoffs begin and examine all written evaluations from all
sources.
- Based
upon written, verbal, and visual observations from the committee, feedback
from coaches and AD’s, and input from the Commissioner, the committee will
assign every Full/Active member in the Association to one of the following
general levels of ability: (A) Varsity or (B) Non-Varsity.
- Each
Varsity Level umpire will then be discussed, one by one, and placed in one
of the following categories: (A) Playoff caliber, (B) Non-Playoff caliber.
Note: any umpire who fails to meet the mandatory requirements set forth in
the section above will be automatically eliminated from the Playoff
caliber category.
- The
Committee will then decide the maximum level (District First Round,
Regional Semi-Final, State Quarter-Final, etc.) each Playoff caliber
umpire should work.
- All
Playoff caliber umpires will be required to attend the 3-person mechanics
clinic held in early May.
- Those
umpires who attend the 3-person clinic will have their names submitted to
the Commissioner, who in turn will assign all post-season games based on
the recommendations established in #4 above.
NOTES: Every effort will be made to use as
many qualified umpires as possible in the playoffs. Except in dire emergencies,
Softball umpires who also qualify for Baseball playoffs will not work
beyond the District level in Softball if they are also scheduled to work
Regionals or above in the VHSL Baseball playoffs.
In order for MROS to
maintain its high rating in the eyes of the VHSL, it is the philosophy of the
MROS Evaluation Committee and Board of Directors that we assign only “the best
of the best” umpires to the VHSL State-level Playoff games.
