Play of the Week (You Make
the Call)
May 17, 2010
Play:
R3 on 3rd and R2 on 2nd with no outs. B6 hits a long fly
ball to F8 who catches it for out #1. R3 properly tags and heads home. R2 left
too soon and heads for 3rd. Third-base coach hollers for R2 to go
back, but she keeps on coming. R3 thinks that the coach is yelling at her and
she retreats to 3rd base (a) before or (b) after touching Home
Plate. R3 reaches 3rd and because the coach is still yelling ‘Go
Back!’, she heads to 2nd passing R2 who is
between 2nd and 3rd. Now R3 realizes she must return to 3rd,
so she heads back to 3rd and passes R2 who’s heading back to 2nd.
The ball is thrown to F6 who tags R2 while off base before she gets back to 2nd.
R3 arrives safely at 3rd and, due to exhaustion, stays there.
What
do we have here?
Last Week’s Play
PLAY: R2 on 2nd and R1 on 1st.
No outs. B3 hits a pop-up towards the first baseman (F3) playing in. F3 loses
the ball in the sun and ducks to avoid getting hit by the ball. The ball lands
fair and is in fair territory when B3, who is running inside the baseline, is
contacted by the ball. What is the ruling?
Ruling:
B3 is out on the Infield Fly Rule. The ball is dead since it was contacted by a
runner in fair territory before passing a fielder. Runner closest to Home (R2) is
ruled out on Interference by a retired runner.
