Required Equipment Needed to Umpire Scholastic Softball

 

 

Plate Equipment

 

Mask – Best to get lightweight or ultra-lite; must have extended throat protector

 

Chest Protector – Either the minimum ‘softball’ type or the bulkier ‘baseball’ type - must be worn under the uniform shirt

 

Shin Guards – Best to get ones that cover both the knee caps and ankles

 

Protective Cup (Men only) – This may be your most important piece of equipment

 

Plate Shoes – Spend the money and get steel-toed umpire shoes that will last

 

Plate Cap – 6-stitch is best, but the 4-stitch and 8-stitch are acceptable

- must be able to remove the mask without the cap coming off

 

Ball Bag – Heather Gray recommended, but Navy Blue acceptable

- wear on your right hip and only use one

 

Plate Brush – Get one with medium length bristles

- must be unseen, either inside ball bag or pants’ back pocket

 

Indicator – If you can find a metal one, get it… otherwise use a plastic one

            - must hold in LEFT hand and be able to remove mask while holding it

 

 

 

Base Equipment

 

Base Shoes – Get ALL Black with black soles, not tennis shoes or trainers

 

Base Cap – 6-stitch is best, but the 8-stitch is acceptable

 

Brush – Get one with medium to short-length bristles

- must be unseen when placed in your pants’ back pocket

 

Indicator – If you can find a metal one, get it… otherwise use a plastic one

- must hold in LEFT hand and learn to adjust without looking at it
