MROS Meeting Minutes
1/29/06
Chickahominy Middle School
President
Jerry Stone called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m.
Attendance
was taken by sign in sheet.
Jerry
welcomed everyone to the first meeting of the new year. He asked for a moment of silence for the
loss of members’ loved ones since last season.
Tommy Stefi thanked the membership for the flowers at his brother’s
service. Jerry recognized Past
President Tom Dent for his numerous contributions to MROS.
Jerry
then introduced the previously elected (November) officers. As the Members-at-Large were introduced
(Allen Gravatt and Bob Provost), Jerry reminded everyone of his or her primary
duty. They should be used by the
membership for questions or concerns rather than voicing them at meetings. This would allow these “issues” to be dealt
with prior to meetings and prevent potential hard feelings. Also, Dickie Foster was introduced as the new
Interpreter and questions concerning rules, etc. should be brought to him only
after a search of the rulebook (always the first option) has proven
fruitless. The Chairmen of the various
committees were then introduced and their duties were explained to the
membership.
Bruce
Frye introduced the members who had been promoted to full membership at the
November meeting.
Bruce
presented the Treasurer’s report, which was accepted as presented. He, also, explained the 1099’s that were
handed out.
As
Commissioner, Bruce listed the new schools that we will be covering this
year. Powhatan MS will not be one of
them as had previously been reported.
Jerry updated the membership on meetings with the AAA Districts south of
the James and Joe Yates spoke of a possibility with the AA Bay Rivers District
east of Richmond.
The
minutes of the November meeting were approved as presented on the web site.
Dickie
went over rule changes and points of emphasis for the new season. He reiterated points that Jerry had made
earlier concerning his role as Interpreter.
As the rule changes were discussed questions and concerns were
addressed.
Coach
Pat McGuire, head coach of J. R. Tucker HS, was our guest speaker. He gave us some valuable insight from the
coach’s perspective and what he expects from umpires.
Jerry
asked that all “New Business” be sent to the secretary no later than the
Thursday prior to a regularly scheduled meeting. He showed us the approved “alternate” shirt. He stressed that the purchase of the shirt
is strictly voluntary. ONLY IF BOTH
UMPIRES AGREE TO USE THE ALTERNATE SHIRT WILL IT BE ALLOWED FOR USE. If it is a one-man crew then either shirt is
allowed. The alternate shirt is allowed
only during the regular season. The
regular powder blue shirt is mandatory for all post-season games. Both shirts are available at Disco Sports for
$40 plus tax.
Eddie
Small announced that he welcomes all suggestions for guest speakers and/or
programs for any future meeting.
Dickie
announced that he and Bruce would be meeting with all new members after the
regular meeting.
Bruce
accepted sign ups for the scrimmage games and reminded everyone of the
requirements concerning scrimmages.
Data sheets were, also, passed out for any corrections.
The
next meeting is at Mills Godwin HS, in the Library, on February 15th
at 5:00 p.m. The VHSL meeting is at
6:00 p.m.
The
meeting was adjourned at 5:30 p.m.
Respectfully
submitted by Joe Yates.
